The summer 2023 hit “Barbie” is prompting a revival of the famed doll brand, hitting the right notes; combining the perfect blend of nostalgia, artistic innovation, and playful charm, the film amassed considerable excitement.

One of the signature traits of the Barbie brand over the years is its distinct Californian influence. The laid-back and breezy nature of seaside cities like Malibu and Venice, paired with the unmistakable architectural style of Palm Springs, played a monumental role in shaping Barbie's visual essence. This transformative influence didn't stop at the brand; it has significantly contributed to shaping the wider cultural landscape as well. This synergistic relationship means it makes sense “Barbie” was filmed in California.

Venice, alongside Palm Springs and Malibu, has had an impact on how Barbie's aesthetic was shaped.

Parts of the "Barbie" movie were shot in Los Angeles. Known for its irresistible charm and distinctive aesthetic appeal, L.A. is often associated with the Barbiecore aesthetic. This vibrant style is characterized by the bold use of colors (primarily pink) coupled with a hint of modernist glamour and a dash of free-spirited ethos. The outdoor scenes in the movie, set beyond the perimeters of Barbieland, were predominantly filmed in Venice, including the famed Venice Beach. This location ideally complements the vibrant and lively world of Barbie.

Despite the prevalent California vibe, it's interesting to note that the majority of the filming took place at Watford Warner Bros. Studios in England. This studio space provided the movie team with the opportunity to \recreate Barbieland. A combination of practical set design and CGI brought this iconic location to life. However, the design of Barbieland bore heavy imprints of Palm Springs' home design, most notably, the iconic Kaufmann House. Reportedly, director Greta Gerwig was deeply inspired by this architectural tentpole. Designed in the 1940s by the renowned architect Richard Neutra, the Kaufmann House significantly shaped the modernist style that defines Palm Springs. This particular style has also been a key element in influencing Barbie's aesthetic throughout the brand's history.
