Hollywood: the land of dreams, silver screens, and stars in every sense of the word. It's the mecca of movie-making and has given the world some of its most beloved cinematic masterpieces. While many are familiar with Hollywood's Walk of Fame and the iconic Hollywood Sign, there's much more to this legendary locale than meets the eye. Dive into these five fun, family-friendly facts about Hollywood, and you might just see this film fantasyland in a whole new light.

1. The Hollywood Sign Originally Said “Hollywoodland.”

When it was first erected in 1923, the famous Hollywood Sign wasn’t created to promote the entertainment industry. Instead, it was an advertisement for a new housing development named “Hollywoodland.” The sign stretched across the hills with 50-foot-tall letters made of wood and illuminated by 4,000 bulbs. Over time, the “LAND” portion was dropped, and the sign came to represent the entire district and, eventually, the film industry itself. 2. The “Father of Hollywood” Wasn’t A Movie Mogul.

Hollywood's name has a less cinematic origin than one might assume. In the late 1880s, Harvey Henderson Wilcox and his wife, Daeida, bought 120 acres of land west of Los Angeles. The film industry didn’t even exist in the region until about 20 years later, but when it took root, the name “Hollywood” was firmly established.

In 1913, Cecil B. DeMille rented a barn on Vine Street for $75 a month to shoot Hollywood's first full-length feature film, "The Squaw Man." It was a pioneering move for the time, as most films were short reels, often not much longer than a few minutes. Everyone knows the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where over 2,600 brass stars embedded in pink terrazzo and charcoal squares honor entertainment legends. But did you know there's a time capsule buried beneath? In 1990, during its 30th anniversary, a time capsule was placed beneath the Walk. Among its contents are a fedora and gloves from Michael Jackson, a script from the movie “MAS*H”, and a Barbie doll representing Hollywood fashion of the 1990s. It's slated to be opened in 2060 – a fun treat for the next generation.
